WILLIAM HOOKER (solo) AND THE CRISTIAN AMIGO GROUP

William Hooker is an artistic whole, a vast circle of vision and execution. A body of uninterrupted work beginning in the mid-seventies defines him as one of the most important composers and players in jazz. As bandleader, Hooker has fielded ensembles in an incredibly diverse array of configurations. Each collaboration has brought a serious investigation of his compositional agenda and the science of the modern drum kit. As a player, Hooker has long been known for the persuasive power of his relationship with his instrument. His work is frequently grounded in a narrative context. Whether set against a silent film or anchored by a poetic theme, Hooker brings dramatic tension and human warmth to avant-garde jazz. His ability to find fertile ground for moving music in a variety of settings that obliterate genre distinctions offers a much-needed statement of social optimism in the arts. A disciplined, adaptive, and energetic approach to his medium insures that the oeuvre of William Hooker will continue to grow thicker and richer.

Cristian Amigo is an American composer, post-bop blues guitarist, producer, and educator who explores connections between art (classical and jazz) music and American popular and roots musics. His awards include fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the Smithsonian Institution Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, and Meet the Composer. His work has been supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council for the Arts, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, the American Composers Forum, and Innova Recordings, among others.

He has worked with hundreds of artists including Wadada Leo Smith, Elliott Sharp, Eve Beglarian, Mary Rowell, Kathy Supove, Jason Hwang, Andrew Drury, Gustavo Aguilar, Du Yun, JACK Quartet, Jill Sigman/thinkdance, and Miguel Frasconi. Cristian is currently composer-in-residence at INTAR Theater in New York City where he produces concerts and the INTAR Roots & New Music Festival. The 2012 New Grove Dictionary of American Music contains an entry on Cristian and his music. In 2011, he produced the recording NYFA: 25 Years of New York New Music, an anthology that includes music from Meredith Monk, Pauline Oliveros, Joan Tower, ETHEL, and hundreds of others.

” Guitarist-composer Cristian Amigo straddles the contemporary-classical, improv and rock worlds; no wonder he calls his Kingdom of Jones a “new music jam-band.” During any given performance, Messiaen grapples with Led Zeppelin while Perez Prado teaches Stravinsky to mambo.”
