American roots musics are not kitsch.

I think its mistake to market American roots musics as Brooklyn kitsch. A central quality of these styles is honesty and emotional directness. No ironic distance…y’all. It’s possible to reappropriate some of those sounds and tropes into new narratives about ourselves NOW without the Civil War beards, organic pickles, and faux “going to New Orleans” type lyrics. – the editor
