As one of four concerts in INTAR Theater’s Spring Music Series, INTAR EVENING OF EXPERIMENTAL GUITAR features some of NYC’s leading avant-guitarists in various musical settings. Brandon Seabrook (voted best guitarist 2012 by the Village Voice) brings his trio and his hard-edged guitar/banjo attack to the INTAR stage. NYC Alternative Guitar Festival founder/guitarist/composer Joel Harrison (Nels Cline, Norah Jones, Uri Caine, Dewey Redman), guitarist/composer Cristian Amigo (Elliot Sharp, Eve Beglarian, Wadada Leo Smith), and drummer/composer Andrew Drury (Jason Kao Hwang, Steve Swell Trio) team up for their first improvised collaboration in a bass-less trio that is sure to reimagine world/roots music. Guitarist Tor Snyder (Bob Moses, Kenwood Denard, John Medeski) brings his singular, from-another-planet sound that he channels through a Moog guitar. It will be a night of far-searching music and energy as the musicians look to both epitomize and transcend the nature of the guitar.

Sunday evening’s concert on May 19th at 7 PM features the premiere of Jon Catler’s CODES OF ASCENSION for electric just intonation guitar. Johnny Reinhard premieres TREES for bassoon and strings in 8th octave overtone tuning (128 notes). Double bassist Joshua Morris premieres INNER REFLECTIONS by Jurica Jelic of Croatia. Mary Jane Leach’s FEU DE JOIE for bassoon and a soundtrack of bassoons is played live by Reinhard, who also vocally intones A DREAM by Harry Partch to Anastasia Solberg’s viola; and composer/guitarist Cristian Amigo joins bassoonist Reinhard in BLUO.

I’m honored to to have been asked to join, and to join, the Conjure Collective in their mission to create musical opportunities for others as well as themselves. I have not worked with most of these amazing musicians yet but have admired them from afar for a long, long time. This is awesome!

Conjure is a group of musicians working together to support, through collective action, the lives, work and creativity of jazz musicians by a variety of means.
